So, by some crazy twist of fate, I received the new Tom Waits album yesterday, when it’s not supposed to be available until tomorrow. Needless to say, it’s been on constant rotation. I was surprised to see that Flea from the Chili Peppers managed to sneak his grooves onto the tracks “Raised Right Men” and “Hell Broke Luce,” and what a good job he did. I feel like the album as a whole is more accessible in general - there are some oddballs in the group, but many of them are catchy and concise. Bottom line: It’s a real nice record.

So I’m currently reading this book called “The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis” by Jose Saramago. I’m starting to become afraid that it might be a bit over my head, because while I’m really and truly enjoying the hell out of the beautiful writing style and magnificent imagery the author puts forth, I just can’t seem to get a grip on where the story is going…at times it seems almost plotless! I feel like it lacks direction, which is, in my opinion, a big departure from many of his other books where the ideas stay in constant circulation, growing and evolving as the narratives progress. I guess I am hoping for some kind of a revelatory conclusion to pull all these ideas together: it seems almost inevitable for how well praised this book tends to be.

On the other hand, I did a Tumblr search, and there are a TON of people quoting this book…but it’s always in Portuguese. Perhaps I would understand the beauty of this novel more deeply if I lived in Lisbon. We shall see…
